Field and Civil Engineering Ltd were chosen to fit an underground surface water storage tank and drainage system for the new housing development Gleeson Homes. Situated in Halton Moor, Leeds, the community-friendly housing development is perfect for both families and first-time buyers.
Requirements for the water storage and drainage system
Gleeson Homes required a sustainable solution to providing the housing development with potable drinking water and an innovative drainage option for the community. Field and Civil Engineering Ltd were able to provide a custom engineered solution using a thermoplastic large diameter pipe system, which is suitable for use in a wide variety of applications such as surface water, foul water, combined sewers and large-scale flood alleviation schemes. Five parallel rows of 750mm diameter Weholite surface water storage pipes were laid 80m long and governed by a 2.7m diameter flow control chamber. These are made from high-density polyethene (HDPE) resin, a robust chemical resistant material which also minimises leaks due to minimal joints and offers a practical, long-term solution.
The scheme also required a further 100m of off-site 225 diameter drainage system to be laid across a public open space, to facilitate the outfall into Wyke Beck, a tributary to the River Aire. The drainage system was installed to control the run-off water from Gleeson Homes new development on the opposite side of Cartmell Drive. This sustainable drainage system stores and slowly releases surface water run-off to reduce the risk of downstream flooding.
Environmental challenges for water attenuation and pump system
However, the project posed some environmental challenges; FACE had to work closely in cooperation with the Environmental Authority due to the presence of protected White Clawed Cray Fish breeding on the banks of the Wyke Beck. This meant that FACE had to take additional steps in order to minimise the impact of these built water systems on their natural habitat, whilst ensuring conditions after the work had been carried out remained suitable for the crayfish in the long term.
Results of the water storage system for Gleeson Home
Field And Civil Engineering Ltd provided a professional and competent service in carrying out the required work for Gleeson Homes; the underground water storage tank now provides inhabitants at the new housing development with fresh water and a sustainable drainage system that ensures long-term efficiency.
