Saxon Manor, Morris Homes

Two miles south of Tamworth city centre stands the Two Gates suburb. A former industrial site off Tamworth Road, this was the perfect development spot for national housebuilder Morris Homes. The new, landscaped location renamed ‘Saxon Manor’ consists of more than a hundred high-quality homes. Of course, a large development such as this required a Section 278 scheme to improve the existing road network, and in February 2017 FACE were appointed to deliver this project.

We have handled countless Section 278 works, carrying out public highway engineering works from niche developments on quiet country roads through to trunk road alterations with thousands of vehicle movements daily – each presenting their own unique challenges.

At Saxon Manor, FACE were required to make safe changes to Tamworth Road, the A51. It is one of the main roads leading into Tamworth, which means heavy traffic at peak commuting times and continuous vehicle movements throughout the day and night.

The entrance to Saxon Manor is one of four roads connected by a roundabout. Our role required constructing a new splitter island in the centre of the entrance, redefining and realigning the existing entrance road, creating wider footpaths and cycleways as well as creating a new signaled pedestrian crossing and associated street lighting.

With permission to work during daylight hours only, the works required detailed planning and numerous meetings with Staffordshire County Council and Morris Homes. Once plans were agreed, we embarked on an extensive traffic management programme to carry out the works safely and with minimal disruption to road users. Lane closures and at times, full road closures were necessary. We also constructed wheelchair-friendly temporary pedestrian pathways for the duration of the works.

Thanks to the detailed planning process, the road improvement works ran smoothly, and we handed possession back ahead of programme just five weeks after we began. Saxon Manor now has an entrance road befitting its size and status, with a well-lit pedestrian crossing and traffic island. Roadmarking included adding hatched sections to the roundabout itself to ensure the safe movement of vehicles and ease of traffic flow.
